Where community meets ecology to redefine sustainable coffee in Costa Rica

A Farmer-Led Movement

In 1996, twenty-eight families came together to form Afaorca, literally the “Association of Organic Families of the Caraigres Hills.”

Together, they built a micro wet-mill and, more recently, a dry-mill to ensure control over every step of coffee processing, keeping quality, transparency, and integrity intact.

Afaorca is powered by dozens of farmer families, each contributing their unique soils, traditions, and organically grown cherry.

More than a cooperative, it’s a community, with shared resources, seasonal celebrations, and collective reinvestment in infrastructure.

When we visited during the launch of their new dry-mill, we experienced their unity, passion, and deep sense of purpose firsthand

Stronger Together: The Afaorca Way

Meet the families behind Afaorca,  an organic farming collective redefining what community-grown, environmentally responsible coffee can be in Costa Rica’s Tarrazú region.

Eco-Leadership in Action

Commitment to organic farming isn’t just a label; it’s a lifestyle. Afaorca farmers embrace biodiversity, shade-grown methods, and environment-first practices that protect both soil and ecosystem.

Their newly built dry-mill ensures cherry-to-bean traceability, meaning your coffee is farmer-sourced and traceably processed, all the way to your cup .

Why Their Coffee Matters

Each bag of Afaorca coffee is a reflection of an entire community’s care, cultivated at altitude, organic by default, and processed locally for lasting freshness.

Your support uplifts every family involved: strengthening infrastructure, reinforcing organic agriculture, and preserving a sustainable model for generations to come.
